About Me

Armaan Martins

I have always been drawn to how decisions are made under pressure.

Growing up, sport was where I first encountered this. A transfer fee, a team selection, a tactical change. Each decision carried consequences, yet the reasoning behind them was often unclear. Sitting through matches, especially cricket and football, I became less interested in the outcome and more interested in the logic behind it.

Why was one player valued higher than another? Why did some teams consistently outperform their resources?

Over time, I realised that many of these decisions could be understood through numbers. What began as curiosity developed into a way of thinking. I started to see sport not just as competition, but as a system shaped by incentives, constraints, and imperfect information. This led me to explore how data could be used to evaluate performance more objectively, and how markets in sport assign value to talent. This platform emerged from this idea.

It is an independent platform where I build models to study inefficiencies in sports markets.

My work focuses on comparing performance to valuation, whether through wages in football or auction prices in the IPL. The aim is to identify where pricing diverges from underlying output. Alongside building tools, I have written a research paper examining inefficiencies in football’s labour market and continue to develop datasets and models that can be applied across different sporting contexts. More broadly, my interest lies at the intersection of data science and economics. Understanding how individuals and organisations make decisions when information is incomplete and stakes are high.

Sport provides a uniquely visible environment to study this. But the questions extend far beyond it.

How should resources be allocated when outcomes are uncertain?

How do markets misprice value?

And how can data improve the way decisions are made?

This platform is an ongoing attempt to explore those questions.
